Psalm 76

Psalm 76^[a]

For the director of music. With stringed instruments. A psalm of Asaph. A song.

¹God is renowned in Judah;
    in Israel his name is great.^(A)
²His tent is in Salem,^(B)
    his dwelling place in Zion.^(C)
³There he broke the flashing arrows,^(D)
    the shields and the swords, the weapons of war.^[b]^(E)

⁴You are radiant with light,^(F)
    more majestic than mountains rich with game.
⁵The valiant^(G) lie plundered,
    they sleep their last sleep;^(H)
not one of the warriors
    can lift his hands.
⁶At your rebuke,^(I) God of Jacob,
    both horse and chariot^(J) lie still.

⁷It is you alone who are to be feared.^(K)
    Who can stand^(L) before you when you are angry?^(M)
⁸From heaven you pronounced judgment,
    and the land feared^(N) and was quiet—
⁹when you, God, rose up to judge,^(O)
    to save all the afflicted^(P) of the land.
¹⁰Surely your wrath against mankind brings you praise,^(Q)
    and the survivors of your wrath are restrained.^[c]

¹¹Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them;^(R)
    let all the neighboring lands
    bring gifts^(S) to the One to be feared.
¹²He breaks the spirit of rulers;
    he is feared by the kings of the earth.

    and silver in place of iron.
Instead of wood I will bring you bronze,
    and iron in place of stones.
I will make peace^(B) your governor
    and well-being your ruler.^(C)
¹⁸No longer will violence^(D) be heard in your land,
    nor ruin or destruction^(E) within your borders,
but you will call your walls Salvation^(F)
    and your gates Praise.^(G)
¹⁹The sun will no more be your light by day,
    nor will the brightness of the moon shine on you,
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,^(H)
    and your God will be your glory.^(I)
²⁰Your sun^(J) will never set again,
    and your moon will wane no more;
the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your days of sorrow^(K) will end.
²¹Then all your people will be righteous^(L)
    and they will possess^(M) the land forever.
They are the shoot I have planted,^(N)
    the work of my hands,^(O)
    for the display of my splendor.^(P)
²²The least of you will become a thousand,
    the smallest a mighty nation.^(Q)
I am the Lord;
    in its time I will do this swiftly.”^(R)

²⁵Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully^(A) to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.^(B) ²⁶“In your anger do not sin”^[a]:^(C) Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, ²⁷and do not give the devil a foothold.^(D) ²⁸Anyone who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work,^(E) doing something useful with their own hands,^(F) that they may have something to share with those in need.^(G)
